It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William C. (Bill) Solar, a man known for his unwavering dedication to his family, community, and friends. Bill, whose infectious smile
and genuine spirit touched the lives of everyone who knew him, passed away on Tuesday,
January 28, 2025 at his home in Clayton, with his family at his side. He was 75 years old.
Bill was a true one-of-a-kind soul—a man of strong character with a heart of gold. He was
stubborn when it mattered, quick with a silly, quirky remark, and always ready to offer a
helping hand. Whether it was a hug, a cheek smooch, or a simple “thanking you,” Bill knew how
to make everyone feel loved and appreciated.
A lover of Miller Lite and a devoted Jack of all trades, Bill’s home and garage were filled with his handiwork, his passion for learning, and his desire to help others. His generosity knew no
bounds—he would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He lived his life with honor,
strength, and a contagious joy that uplifted all who were lucky enough to know him.
Bill's heart was huge, and his impact on his community was immeasurable. His kindness,
humor, and work ethic left a lasting mark on everyone he met. He was as genuine as they
come—a true man of integrity, a loyal friend, and a loving family member. His spirit was
unmatched, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
Bill was born in Watertown March 15, 1949, son of Charles G. and Gertrude M. (Riches) Solar. He was a 1968 graduate of Clayton Central School and graduated from Jefferson County
BOCES. Marriages to Linda S. Wood and Krista A. Kittle ended in divorce. He served seven years in the US Army Reserves.
Bill was a shop foreman for Frink SnoPlow for 15 years and then 4 years for Snow Blast Cives
Steel. He retired from Ft. Drum as an equipment operator in July of 2024. He also worked for
Kenny Rogers Construction in the summers, also retiring from the company in 2024. Bill was a
member and past chief of the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the NYS Drill Team Captain's Association. He was also a member of Clayton American Legion Colon-Couch Post 821.
Bill is survived by his three children, Kristi S. Bice, Watertown, Erin L. Harkinson and companion Barry Morgan, Altoona, PA, and William C. (Billy) Solar II and wife Beth, Clayton; six
grandchildren, Dylan, Kassidy, Alexa, Trevor, Chayse, and Cooper; brother Robert G. Solar, Sr.
and wife Sandy, Lovingston, VA; companion Sally Hunt Bogenschutz, Clayton; four nephews
and several cousins. His father, Charles, died July 31, 2020, his mother Gertrude, died April 27,
2019, and he was also predeceased by his sister-in-law Cheryl Solar.
He will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to share in his life.
As per his wishes there will be no services. A Celebration of Bill's Life will be held at the
Depauville Hotel on Saturday, February 22, beginning at 2:00 PM. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings
