Timothy Keegan Obituary

Timothy John Keegan, 74, a resident of Johnstown, NY and formerly of Watertown, died March 19, 2025 surrounded by his family. His last few weeks were spent under the care of St. Peter’s Hospital and Hospice.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Friday, March 28, from 4 - 7PM. His funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church on Saturday, March 29, at 10:00AM with Rev. Paul Alciati and Rev. William Muench presiding. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Tim's funeral mass will be live streamed on St. Patrick's Church's (Watertown) Facebook page.

Timothy was born on August 28, 1950 to William Edward Keegan and Agnes Elizabeth Flynn Keegan in Watertown, NY. He attended Sacred Heart School for Kindergarten and Holy Family School for Elementary and Junior High School. In 1968 he graduated from Immaculate Heart Central High School and went on to earn a BS in Mathematics from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY.   Upon graduation, he worked as a counselor for Social Security.  In November of 1986, he left that position to pursue a career in Financial Planning and Wealth Management with First Albany Corporation in Johnstown, NY.  His practice was eventually acquired by Wells Fargo where Tim moved rapidly up the ranks, eventually forming his own practice The Keegan Group, continuing as the Senior Vice President until his retirement in June of 2024.  Tim managed his client’s investments personally, not a common practice in the field. He was recognized as one of America’s Top Wealth Advisors by Forbes in 2023. As always, Tim gave special thanks to his clients who helped make it possible.

Tim worked in the community to help create a better place for all.  He served on boards for Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Mountain Valley Hospice, Fulton County YMCA, and Burroughs Nature Study Club.  He was the Financial Advisor for Mountain Valley Hospice, Johnstown Hospital Foundation, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Fulton County YMCA, Johnstown Library, Wells Nursing Home and Martha Ross Small Memorial Scholarship Fund. There were so many more contributions Tim made to his community which were untold stories. If Tim was asked to help with an event or a fundraiser, the answer was always yes.

Music was a life long companion for Tim. He started singing in High School and from that point on it was an integral part of his life. It  started with The Young People at Immaculate Heart Central and continued on into college where he sang in the Glee Club and with other members of The Young People who were also at St. John Fisher. When he graduated from college, he performed in Vermont during the wintertime making his mark at ski resorts in the area. Tim decided that music was not going to be his profession, but rather a passion and an outlet. While working for Social Security he began singing on his own at the Charlton Tavern and was soon singing as a duo with his friend Don Golden. Every now and then being joined by his brothers Peter and Ted. That duo went on to add a third and became the Foothills Trio, which had a very large following in the Johnstown and Saratoga Region, with sold-out performances and CDs as a result. Tim loved to create arrangements for the group. And if there was a high harmony part, that is where you would find him. he was a gifted storyteller who could draw you in with his charm and wit with an ease that was beguiling. When he traveled, so did his guitar. Tim was a true master of his craft and created so much joy whether he was on stage, in a living room, or on the front porch.

In his youth, Tim was a true athlete. His interests were in baseball and basketball. We never heard the end of his MVP award. That trophy seemed to move around our house all by itself. It could be seen on the mantel, on the dining room table, or even on the bathroom counter. We will continue to keep that story alive for generations.

He loved his family and all those lucky enough to marry into it.  For the record he had three favorite brother-in-laws. We know this because, before his death, Tim spoke to each one individually and told them they were his favorite brother-in-law.  He loved being together and talking about our experiences and the memories that had been created.  He loved to entertain and there was nothing he enjoyed more than his house being filled with family and friends and a whole lot of laughter.

He faced his last weeks with great courage.  Never complaining and forever interjecting a witty remark that would make you laugh to ease the tension.  He knew his time was short and did everything he could to make it easier on family and friends that were there to support him.

Tim is survived by his sister Deanne Keegan Jones and husband, Gerold, East Aurora, NY, his sister Sarah Keegan Morgia and husband, Bruce, Watertown, NY  and William Edward “Ted” Keegan and husband, David Thiergartner, West Hurley NY. 6 nieces and nephews:  Benjamin Keegan, wife Katy, and  daughter Ruby; Meghan Jones Morello, husband Benny, and children Gio and Stella; Graham Keegan, partner Rose Fairley; Travis Morgia, wife Molly, and daughter Margot Luna; Tia Morgia Allen, husband Jeremy, and son Ace; Jonathan Jones, wife Joanne.  Tim was predeceased by his sister Mary Ann Keegan and brother Peter Gerald Keegan.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Tim’s name to your local food pantry, your local Hospice or a local charity of your choice. Online condolences to his family may be posted at www.cummingsfuneral.com.
