Shirley M. Connell, 89, Adams Center passed away Monday, March 31, 2025, at Hospice of Jefferson County.
Shirley was born in Henderson September 13, 1935, daughter of Howard and Alta (Beadle) Baker and she was a graduate of West Carthage High School. On November 25, 1954 she married Walter C. Connell at the LaFargeville Methodist Church with Rev. Robert E. Malabar officiating. Mr. Connell died May 25, 1996.
She was a sewing machine operator for Lally Manufacturing, Adams and retired from Hannah Sportswear, Dexter. Shirley was a long time member of Sulphur Springs Methodist Church. She had served as a trustee and a member of its Worship and Memorial Committees. She enjoyed Sudoku and crocheting, especially afghans. She loved to ride horses, riding one on her 70 birthday and on one on her 80th birthday. She also loved all animals and enjoyed giving treats to the Hospice dogs during her stay.
Shirley is survived by her two grandchildren, Sarah Jane (Adam) McCoy, Pineville, LA and Anthoni Connell, LA; three great granddaughters, Layla Cates and Emmalin and Allie McCoy; sister Elsie (Bob) Stewart; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with her parents and husband, Shirley was predeceased by her two sons, Sgt. (Air Force) Hance W. Connell, June 16, 1986, and Lance W. Connell, August 23, 2018; two brothers, David and Charles Baker; and three sisters, Marjorie Baker, Gertrude Barr, and Hazel Mellon.
A graveside service in Dexter Cemetery will be held on Saturday, July 12, at 10:00 AM. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown and online condolences to Shirley's family may be posted at www.cummingsfuneral.com. Donations in her name may be made to the Memorial Fund at Sulphur Springs Methodist Church, c/o John Mantle, 30 Hungerford Ave., Adams, NY 13605.
