Roger H. Hoistion, 77, Grant St., Watertown passed away Sunday afternoon, September 1, 2013, at Hospice of Jefferson County at the Ellis Farm.
Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Wednesday, September 4, from 4 - 7PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church on Thursday, September 5, at 10AM with Rev. Jonas Tandayn, MSC officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Mr. Hoistion was born in Watertown on July 30, 1936, son of George and Gladys Youngs Hoistion. He attended Hounsfield schools and graduated from Watertown High School in 1954.
He entered the US Army on January 16, 1956 and served actively for two years. He was honorably discharged December 31, 1961.
On August 11, 1956 he married Harriet J. Reff at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Joseph A. Francoeur officiating, and she died December 14, 1997.
Roger worked in the warehouse and in sales for Bradley Hardware, and then for Key Bank in collections and maintenance. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, on its Council, Foundation, and a Board Trustee, was active with many projects at the church, and in 1984 he was named Holy Name Man of the Year.
He was a member of Elks Lodge 496 and a life member of the Northside Improvement League and its booster club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and helping others. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America for many years with Troop 8 at Holy Family Church, Troop 23 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, and was an assistant Scout Master for fifteen years.
He is survived by his eight children, Sarah J. Hoistion and Rita M. and Robert Gefell, all of Watertown, Jackie J. and Dave Weil, Harper's Ferry, WV, Amy S. Keegan, Woodbridge, VA, James A. and Vilma Hoistion, Springfield, MA, Lisa R. and Thomas Luptak, Kemptville, Ontario, Richard J. and Margaret Hoistion, Norfolk, and Judy A. and Thomas Arvan, Franklin, OH; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren; brother, George Hoistion, Calcium; two sisters, Christina Roberts, Black River, NY and Mary Lou Weaver, FL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his wife, Harriet, he was predeceased by two brothers, Nelson and Lawrence Hoistion.
