JoAnn "JoJo" Whitton Obituary

   JoAnn "JoJo" Whitton (Vingione), aged 68, of Clayton, NY, passed away on July 26, 2024. Born on November 15, 1955, in Syracuse, NY, she was a beloved figure known for her vibrant and outgoing personality, often described as the life of the party, whose smile would brighten a room.
   JoAnn graduated from East Syracuse Minoa High School and dedicated many years to the local community, working as a teaching assistant for the ESM school district, a supervisor at Toys R Us, and a server/bartender at several restaurants in Clayton, NY. Her career was marked by her nurturing spirit and unwavering dedication to those around her.
   A proud veteran, JoAnn served in the United States Navy, where she embraced the camaraderie and discipline of military life. Her commitment to service continued through her active involvement as Post Commander with the American Legion Colon Couch Post 821 in Clayton, NY.
   JoAnn's hobbies and interests painted the picture of a woman deeply connected to her community and family. She was an avid reader and needlepoint enthusiast, and cherished boating on the River with loved ones or relaxing by her pool. In her younger years she could always be found on the softball field, coaching her daughter Kristy’s softball or cheerleading team, cheering on her son Cory on the wrestling mat or both the lacrosse and football fields, and traveling to Disney with her daughter Elizabeth. Her holiday decorations were legendary, she cheered passionately for Syracuse University sports, and she found great joy in Face Timing with her grandsons in South Carolina.
   She is survived by her husband, David; son Cory Filmer (Shannon) of East Syracuse, NY, and their children Alexis, Taylor, and Meghan; daughter Kristy McAllister (Jay) of Fort Mill, SC, and their children Jacoby and Brycen; daughter Elizabeth Campbell of East Syracuse, NY; stepdaughter Megan Whitton (Dustin) of Evans Mills, NY, and their daughter Arlene; sister Nancy Green (Bob) of New Smyrna Beach, FL, and their children Robert and Nathan;
sister Grace Bray (Bruce) of Syracuse, NY, and their children Kelly, Anthony, and Alexandria; sister Margie Rush (Mike) of Mattydale, NY, and their children Patrick and Danny; sister-in-law Darcy To (Sergio) of Lucerne Valley, CA; brother-in-law Darrel Whitton (Teresa) of Governor, NY; mother and father-in-law Darrel and Arlene Whitton of Cape Vincent, NY, along with several great-nieces and nephews. JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony John and Joan Theresa (Winchell) Vingione, and stepson Ethan “Bug” Whitton who unexpectedly passed away on June 30, 2024.

   A memorial service will be held at the Monument in downtown Clayton, NY, on August 10th at 10am. A celebration of life will immediately follow at the American Legion Post 821.
