Gregory Herrick "Cookie" Hayes, 63, a 10 year resident of Lacona and formerly of Watertown passed away Sunday morning, September 29, 2024, at Samaritan Medical Center.
Greg was born in Watertown June 8, 1961, son of Robert C. and Claire P. (Joynt) Hayes and he was a 1979 graduate of Watertown High School. He retired October 27, 2023 from the Jefferson County Highway Dept. after over 33 years of service to the county.
Greg enjoyed spending time with his family, especially at the lake in the summertime. His hobbies included hunting and snowmobiling. Time spent with good friends on Tug Hill was something he always looked forward to. Cookie was a lifetime member of Ducks Unlimited and a member of the North American Hunting Club.
He is survived by his four siblings, Susan H. (Robert) Bower, Henrietta, Stephanie H. (Scott) Oldfield, Penfield, Jennifer H. (Steven) Ossola, Lacona, and Peter A. Hayes, Rodman; aunt Stephanie Halferty; cousin Shawn (Shelby Cohen) Halferty; 10 nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and great nephews. His father died October 17, 2004 and his mother on December 23, 2012.
A celebration of Greg's life will be held on Saturday, October 5, at Tug Hill Hook & Ladder, 6253 Salmon River Rd., Lowville from 1:00 - 4:00 PM. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown and online condolences to his family may be posted at www.cummingsfuneral.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in Cookie's name may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St., Watertown, NY 13601.
