Edwin Thomas "Tom" Carr Obituary

Edwin Thomas "Tom" Carr, 87, Clayton passed away Monday, January 5, 2026, at Samaritan Summit Village where he had resided since March 17, 2025.

Tom was born January 30, 1938, son of Lewis and Angelia (Babcock) Carr in Watertown. The family was living in Richland and in 1940, they moved to the Babcock Family Farm near Clayton when he was two years old. He attended Clayton High School and graduated in 1955. He entered the US Navy in 1955, serving actively, and was honorably discharged from the Naval Reserves in February 1963.

He worked on the family farm until his grandfather sold his cows. Tom worked many different types of jobs: Sears, Frink SnoPlow, Tylo Roofing, St. Lawrence C-Way Project, General Crushed Stone (where he was in a very bad accident at work), Kittle Motors, Plumpton Chevrolet, and Claude's Transmission. He finally opened his own business, E. T. Transmissions.

He married Diane Fay September 2, 1961 at Hope Presbyterian Church, Watertown. In their early marriage they moved several times, Watertown, South Fallsburg, Calcium, and Sackets Harbor. While living in Sackets Harbor, he was a member of the Sackets Harbor Fire Department, EMT Ambulance Squad, and driver for the Firematics Race Team. In 1973 Tom and Diane purchased the Babcock Family Farm. They were the 6th generation to own the property, through his mother's family.

Tom loved to kayak. He went on many adventures on the St. Lawrence River, in all seasons. At the age of 73 he entered a 90 mile kayak race in the Adirondack Mountains. One of his hiking adventures was from Number Four through all the woods and waterways with his son Tommy and brother Larry to Star Lake. Another was from Thendara to camp at Number Four with brothers Jerry, Larry, and son Tommy. He was a hunter and liked to fish. Tom was  President of the Depauville Gun club for many years and was a member for over 50 years. And a big thank you to all our wonderful neighbors that have been there for us when we needed help.

Tom is survived by his wife of 64 years, Diane; two sons, Tomas Carr and companion Dee, Chaumont and James Carr and wife Denice, Durham, NC; brother Jerry F. Carr, Clayton; sister Lou Anne Hager and husband Clarence "Cal", goodyear, AZ; sister-in-law Jean M. Carr, Clayton; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Charles L. Carr and his wife Rita and Larry f. Carr.
