Dorthy E. Halstead Obituary

Dorthy E. Halstead, "Grandma Ellie" 91, Watertown, formerly of Massena and Syracuse, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013, at Samaritan Summit Village.


There will be no calling hours or service. Burial at the convienience of the family. Arrangements are with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown.


Dorthy was born in Olean, NY on July 15, 1921, daughter of Floyd and Teva Lyman Halstead, and she was raised by her mother and step-father, Joe Watson. She graduated from Madrid Central School in 1938.


She worked as a nanny for 26 yrs. for the Klekosky family in Syracuse, raising their 6 children; as a laborer for Upjohn's, and as a home-care aide. She moved to Watertown after her retirement to be near her 'daughter' Margrette Vaadi of Rodman. She crocheted extensively, and was especially proficient in fine and intricate work. She loved to read, do crosswords, and listen to good music. Dorothy loved all animals, but especially cats.


She is survived by several nieces, nephews, 'five children' and many grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph "Huckle" Watson and James Halstead, Massena, and two sisters, Velma (Halstead) Farnsworth, Massena and Dawn (Watson) McWilliams, Oklahoma.
