Burton R. Patterson, 78, State Street, Clayton, died at his home on Thursday afternoon, March 20, 2014, under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County. Calling Hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc. 320 John St. on Monday, March 24, from 4 - 7PM. The funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Clayton with Fr.John Crosswaite, Rector, officiating on Tuesday, March 25, at 11:00 am . Burial at Clayton Cemetery will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Burt's name can be made to Christ Episcopal Church 412 Hugunin Street, Clayton, N.Y. 13624 or Hospice of Jefferson County 1398 Gotham St. Watertown, N.Y. 13601.
Burt was born in Clayton on June 21, 1935, the son of Harry V. and Luella A. "Nellie" Searles Patterson. He graduated from Clayton Central School in 1953 and from Mohawk Valley Community College in 1958 with a degree in Banking, Insurance and Real Estate. He married Rae Hammond on September 27, 1959 at Christ Episcopal Church with Fr. David Talbot officiating. Burt was owner and operator of Patterson's Grocery from 1964-1975, when he went to work for Sysco Frosted Foods as a salesman until his retirement.
Burt was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, a former member of the Clayton Lions Club, and a leader of Boy Scout Troop #32. He greatly enjoyed playing chess with his grandchildren.
Burt is survived by his wife, Rae H. Patterson, his two daughters, Lorraine R. Guidry and husband Maurice of Watertown and Meredith R. Bulger and husband Matthew A. of Baldwinsville ; 3 grandchildren, Austin Jon Guidry, Michael Patrick Veith and Montana Rae Veith; his sister, Rehba P. Clarke, of Watertown; his brother Douglas V. Patterson and wife Millie of Clayton; 3 nieces, 1 nephew and cousins. Burt is predeceased by his daughter, Barbara R. Mulherin, who died on December 7, 1991.
