Betty M. Altenfelder, 87, Calhoun Rd., Clayton passed away at her home on Sunday, December 28, 2014.
A graveside service will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery, Clayton on Friday, January 2, 2015, at 10AM with Rev. Arthur LaBaff, pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating. There will be no calling hours and arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton.
Betty was born in Watertown on January 29, 1927, the daughter of George and Rose Flynn Calhoun. She graduated from Clayton High School in 1945 and attended the University of Miami in FL.
On October 5, 1957 she married Hermann R. "Hermi" Altenfelder at St. Mary's Church in Clayton and he died September 1, 2011.
She worked for the Clayton Manufacturing Co. until her parents' deaths in 1959 and 1960. Betty and her husband took over Cal's Cottages in Clayton after their deaths, which they co-owned and operated for many years. The couple spent winters in Crested Butte, CO, where she was a lift operator at Mt. Crested Butte Ski Resort and then became a hostess at the Nordic Inn. Since 2008 they wintered in FL and she continued to after his death. The couple enjoyed travelling around the US and in Europe and she was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Lori and Edward Loy, Clayton; son, Marcel Altenfelder, Alexandria Bay; son-in-law, John Loy, Clayton; and grandson, Nicholas Andress, Clayton. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Hermann "Hermi" Altenfelder, Jr., May 13, 2001, and daughter, Heidi Loy, October 27, 2011.
