Clayton - Robert Matthews, born 1933 in Binghamton, N.Y. passed peacefully Oct. 1, 2017 of Parkinson's Disease at the family cottage on his beloved river. He was a graduate of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., followed by honored service aboard the USS Arnold J. Isbell, DD869, under the command of Adm. Elmo Zumwalt. He served as an electronics technician, class 2.
Robert enjoyed a 36-year career in banking and retired as a senior vice president of Marine Midland Bank, Binghamton, N.Y., where he also served on two hospital boards and on Christ Episcopal Church's vestry. He dedicated his free time to extensive research of the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River, authoring two books and numerous articles on the area. The family collection of regional artifacts was on exhibit for ten years at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, N.Y. His passion for research and deep knowledge was profoundly rewarding to all lucky enough to hear his stories. Together, Robert and Prudence enjoyed many years of travel and many wonderful memories. Upon retirement, their years were spent between the river and St. Petersburg, Fla.
Robert is survived by his wife, Prudence; daughter, Beverly, her husband, Bruce, and their three children, Matthew, Melissa and Leigh; son, Kenneth, and his wife, Chris; and son, Charles, Sueann and his daughters, Ripley and Casey.
