Claire L. Coughlin

November 1, 2016

Claire L. CoughlinHello, I'm Claire, and I passed on All Saint's Day, November 1. I was born Claire Louise Monette on June 25, 1934 in the French speaking town of Winooski, Vermont. I lived there with my dad, Mitch, and mom, Roseali, until the third grade when we moved to Plattsburg, NY, where they spoke only English. Yikes - I didn't know any! My sister, Patricia and brother, Mitch, and I adapted and would remain there until adulthood.

In my late teens, I went to an all girls school and one lucky day I got to go to a dance where there were "boys" and met a handsome young buck named Joseph Coughlin and fell in love. We eventually married and moved to Watertown, NY to start a family.

As a new member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, I was involved in the Altar & Rosary Society and the Home Bureau. I was a member and former president of the Calcium Fire Dept. Auxiliary. I spent a few years as a Girl Scout Leader and had both my daughters, Irene, now from Greensboro, NC, and Mary Rose, Adams, involved with the troops. My boys, Stephen, Watertown, Shawn, Greensboro, NC, Joe Jr., Sand Springs, OK, and Patrick, Watertown, were all Cub Scouts and later altar boys with the church. Sadly I lost my son Michael at an early age, but I've been blessed with nine grandkids and a small village of great grandchildren.

I held several jobs over the years, including D. O. T. switch board operator (remember them?), shoe salesman for J. C. Penney near Public Square, and mail clerk for House of the Good Samaritan Hospital. A nature lover and frequent camper, I also loved to crochet blankets and slippers which I sold at local craft fairs. A penchant for reading lead me to writing and I was the principal author of a published novel - Santanoni Sunrise.

I have met a large number of wonderful people along the way but none better than my loving husband of 62 years, Joe. I'll be waiting for you on the other side, honey, but take your time - there is still a lot of good you can do while I start doing my part to help others from the other side of the eternal fence. Oh, and wait 'til you see my wings - they're awesome!

A funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 10AM with Rev. Jonas Tandayu, pastor, presiding followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown and online condolences to my family may be made at www.cummingsfuneral.com.

To all my friends and family, God bless you and thank you for all you have done for me. I ask but one parting favor. In lieu of gifts or flower could you honor me by making a donation to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in my name. It would bring a warm smile to my face as I begin my new heavenly adventure.

Sending my most sincere condolences on the passing of your wife and Mom. I have so many fond memories of playing with the Coughlin kids growing up while visiting with my grandparents (Don & Hazel). I can still see your Dad out there cleaning the pool and mowing the lawn :) Much love & blessings to your family!

Dear "Stevie" :o) & Joe,

A lovelier obituary has probably never been written. It truly made me smile and then think back to the good old days on Rt 37.
