Rosamond A. Horton Van Arnam

June 24, 2016

Rosamond A. Horton Van Arnam, age 78, of Watertown, passed away on June 24, 2016 with her family by her side. She was a woman of strong faith and character who will be missed dearly and remembered for her service to others. Ro, as she was known to all, was born November 29, 1937 on the Morris Settlement Road in Chaumont and later moved to the family farm on the Dutch Settlement Road in Evans Mills. She graduated from Evans Mills High School in 1955 and from the House of the Good Samaritan Nursing School in 1958 as a Registered Nurse.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., 214 Sterling St., Watertown on Monday, June 27, from 5 - 8PM. A prayer service will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 28, at 10:15AM followed by the funeral mass celebrated at 11AM at Holy Family Church with Father Steve Murray. Burial after the mass will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Rosamond married the late Richard J. Van Arnam on June 6, 1959 at Holy Family Church in Watertown, NY with Father Robert Lawyer officiating. She was a nurse to many in the community, working on the Obstetrics, Labor and Delivery floor at The House of the Good Samaritan from late 1958 through 1977. She then joined Dr. Henry L. George’s pediatrics practice where she worked until retiring in 1999. Even in retirement, she continued to practice nursing working part-time within the Watertown School District.

An active volunteer, she had a special fondness for assisting at the Precious Blood Monastery where she became close friends with the sisters. On Thursday mornings, she could be found volunteering at Holy Family Church where she had attended for over fifty-five years. Ro also volunteered at the House of the Good Samaritan’s Gift Shop for several years. When not volunteering, Ro looked forward to spending summer weekends at her cottage on Stony Lake surrounded by family, friends, and the lake community.

Rosamond is survived by her daughter, Tracy Van Arnam and Darrel Yahn of Shortsville, NY and two sons, Richard J. Van Arnam, Jr. and his wife, Connie, of Chicago, IL and Steven J. Van Arnam and his wife, Ruth Ellen, of Watertown, NY; six grandchildren, Jessica Elliott, Connor and Elana Van Arnam, and Blaire, John, and Riley Van Arnam; two great grandchildren, Madisyn Elliott and Mason Holbrook; two brothers, Ralph Horton of Salem, NY and Carl Horton of Philadelphia, NY; her dear aunt, Ella Marie Fults of Evans Mills, NY; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
