Rosamond A. Horton Van Arnam

June 24, 2016

Rosamond A. Horton Van Arnam, age 78, of Watertown, passed away on June 24, 2016 with her family by her side. She was a woman of strong faith and character who will be missed dearly and remembered for her service to others. Ro, as she was known to all, was born November 29, 1937 on the Morris Settlement Road in Chaumont and later moved to the family farm on the Dutch Settlement Road in Evans Mills. She graduated from Evans Mills High School in 1955 and from the House of the Good Samaritan Nursing School in 1958 as a Registered Nurse.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., 214 Sterling St., Watertown on Monday, June 27, from 5 - 8PM. A prayer service will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 28, at 10:15AM followed by the funeral mass celebrated at 11AM at Holy Family Church with Father Steve Murray. Burial after the mass will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Rosamond married the late Richard J. Van Arnam on June 6, 1959 at Holy Family Church in Watertown, NY with Father Robert Lawyer officiating. She was a nurse to many in the community, working on the Obstetrics, Labor and Delivery floor at The House of the Good Samaritan from late 1958 through 1977. She then joined Dr. Henry L. George’s pediatrics practice where she worked until retiring in 1999. Even in retirement, she continued to practice nursing working part-time within the Watertown School District.

An active volunteer, she had a special fondness for assisting at the Precious Blood Monastery where she became close friends with the sisters. On Thursday mornings, she could be found volunteering at Holy Family Church where she had attended for over fifty-five years. Ro also volunteered at the House of the Good Samaritan’s Gift Shop for several years. When not volunteering, Ro looked forward to spending summer weekends at her cottage on Stony Lake surrounded by family, friends, and the lake community.

Rosamond is survived by her daughter, Tracy Van Arnam and Darrel Yahn of Shortsville, NY and two sons, Richard J. Van Arnam, Jr. and his wife, Connie, of Chicago, IL and Steven J. Van Arnam and his wife, Ruth Ellen, of Watertown, NY; six grandchildren, Jessica Elliott, Connor and Elana Van Arnam, and Blaire, John, and Riley Van Arnam; two great grandchildren, Madisyn Elliott and Mason Holbrook; two brothers, Ralph Horton of Salem, NY and Carl Horton of Philadelphia, NY; her dear aunt, Ella Marie Fults of Evans Mills, NY; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Rosamond was predeceased by her parents Niles and Ida Mae Horton, grandson, Jordan Elliott, and a younger brother Alan Horton.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham Street, Watertown, NY 13601.

We were very sad to hear of Rosamond's passing. She was a friend whom I inherited by my sister, Donna Cummings. Donna and Rosamond were nursing students together at House of the Good Samaritan and lifelong friends.
Donna would take me visiting Rose at her home when she visited twice a year from Virginia. I was probably 10 or 11 when that started. Donna was 12 years older than me.
Later I would see Rose at Dr. George's office for the growing up years of my 3 children.
Then in the past 20? years I would see her faithfully serving at the Town of Watertown voting site. I always adored her and my husband did too. She was always such a friendly face and seeing her always brought my sister closer and I believe she felt that too.
She certainly was a wonderful friendly person.
She will be greatly missed. My sympathies go out to you. I know how much you must have adored her.

Ro was my neighbor on Middle Rd for many years, as well as nurse to my children at Dr George's office. She was a lovely person. When my husband died she spent many hours at our house helping to feed and clean up after the multitude of guests. I will always remember her kindness and generosity. My sympathies go out to all of Ro's family.

I worked with Ro at HGS for several years and then she was my favorite nurse and friend at Dr George's office. She was always there to give a new mother good advice. I'm blessed to have known her.

Dear Steven and all the family;
To express my deepest sympathies of the loss of a wonderful mother, my most favorite care taker/nurse from Dr.George's Office. Ro will be missed seeing at the Precious Blood Monastry as her hospitality and help with the cards and paying was always a joy to see her smiling face and always asking how my family and mother was doing. She will be greatly missed and I personnally will miss her at the door at the Precious Blood Monastry putting cards out to buy and take our money of the cards we purchased. I will miss her love and her lovely smile on her face that will stay with me through the rest of my life here on earth. So sorry for the entire family of a wonderful person, mother and friend all have lost for all.
Love and prayers for all the family and friends who love Ro so much. God's love and peace for all to help in this difficult time.
Love,Deanna Gaebel
