Vernon K. Wilder, Sr.

Vernon K Wilder, Sr., 85, Sherman St., Watertown passed away Thursday morning, April 28, 2016, at his daughter's home under her care and also the care of Cheryl Vaness, RN and Hospice of Jefferson County.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick's Church on Monday, May 2, at 1:00 PM with Rev. Joseph Christy presiding and burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery. There will be no calling hours and arrangements are entrusted to Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown.

Vernon was born in Watertown on November 23, 1930, son of Kenneth and Beatrice Fisher Wilder and he attended local schools. On October 13, 1951 he married Betty J. Cowles in the rectory of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Lesperance officiating. Mrs. Wilder passed on July 4, 2004.

On September 7, 1950 he entered the US Air Force. He received the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged as an Airman 2nd Class on January 19, 1954. For forty years he worked for Young's Express as a truck driver and was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church.

Vernon is survived by his daughter, Kim E. and Arthur W. Dyke, and son, Mark J. Wilder, all of Watertown; three grandsons, Eric and Heather Wilder, Jayson Dyke and Justin and Kaitlyn Dyke; three great grandsons and one great granddaughter; two brothers, Truman and Pamela Wilder, SC and Ronald and Joan Wilder, Chaumont; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Along with his wife, Betty, Vernon was predeceased by his son, Vernon K. Wilder, Jr., January 12, 1997, and two sisters, Norma Phillips and Delores Rogers Elmer.

In lieu of flowers his family wishes donations in his name to either Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St. or SPCA of Jefferson County, 25056 Water St., both in Watertown, NY 13601. Online condolences may be made at www.cummingsfuneral.com.

We were so sorry to hear of Vern's passing. He was such a kind hearted person and truly one of a kind. I am certain he is in heaven with his beloved family that passed before him. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers.
