Gerald A. Orvis, Sr.Gerald A. Orvis, Sr., 91, Gore Rd., LaFargeville passed away Saturday afternoon, November 29, 2014, at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County. Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton on Sunday, December 7, 2014, from 2 - 4PM. The funeral service will be held at St. John's Church, LaFargeville on Monday, December 8, at 11AM with Rev. Arthur LaBaff, pastor, presiding and burial will follow with military honors at St. John's Cemetery.

Gerald was born in Clayton on February 6, 1923, the son of Ira A. and Hattie Fulmer Orvis and he graduated from Alexandria Bay High School.

On December 12, 1942 he entered the US Marine Corps. He was a sharpshooter and served in the South Pacific. He received the WWII Victory and Good Conduct Medals and was honorably discharged on December 20, 1945.

On May 27, 1945 he married Arlene LaParr at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, Watertown with Rev. Benoit C. Dostie officiating. Mrs. Orvis died July 11, 2010. For 60 years he farmed on Gore Rd. During that time he also worked as a welder and fitter for Frinks SnoPlow for 30 years. Gerald was a communicant of St. John's Church and a member of the Grange in Omar. He enjoyed hunting and card playing.

Mr. Orvis is survived by his seven children, Gerald A. and Irene Orvis, Jr., Clayton, Darrell L. and Diana Orvis, Chaumont, Cheryl A. and Gary Phelps, Chaumont, Charlotte A. Pacific, Gunns Corners, Kevin L. and Jojean Orvis, LaFargeville, Peter B. and Julie Orvis, LaFargeville, and Lori E. and William Phelps, Chaumont; 21 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren; sister, Florence I. Booth, Philadelphia; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his wife, Arlene, he is predeceased by brother, Harold, sisters, Ruth Sanders, Madeline Fisher, and Jessie Mageary, and son-in-law, Robert T. Pacific.
