Joan A. BrownJoan A. Brown, 92, of Clayton, passed away Sunday afternoon, February 11, 2024, at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown, with her family at her side.

Joan was born in the Town of Orleans on October 4, 1931, daughter of Robert F. House, Sr. and Aleta A. Ingerson House. She attended a country school for three years and Clayton High School from 1936 - 1949. A marriage to William E. Brown ended in divorce.

Joan was a hard worker. She worked as a clerk at Pearl's Dept. Store and Ellis Drug Store, from 1951 - 1969 she worked at Johnstown Knitting Mill, she cleaned the 1st National Bank and the Baptist Church, did nurse's aide training at E. J. Noble Hospital for three years, and retired from Bomax Manufacturing in 1993 after 22 years of service to the company. After retirement, she worked for Georges Plumbing and Heating and managed Rayview Manor for 10 years.

Joan was a member of the Clayton Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary and Rebekah Lodge 109. She enjoyed selling Avon for 20 years and received high honors from the company. She loved animals and always had a pet.

Joan is survived by her son and his wife, Michael R. and Penny L. Brown, Clayton; daughter Lynn M. Spears, Clayton; granddaughter Kerry E. Hill and husband Patrick, Florida; and six great-grandchildren. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter Kelly J. Orvis, March 4, 2019; son-in-law Gerald Spears, May 9, 2021; and brother R. F. House, Jr., September 16, 2021.

There will be no services, as per her wishes. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton, and online condolences to Joan's family may be posted at www.cummingsfuneral.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the SPCA of Jefferson County, 25056 Water St., Watertown, NY 13601.
