John A ClearyJohn A. Cleary, 81, passed away at his home in Watertown on Sunday morning, January 28, 2024.

John was born in Watertown on February 6, 1942, son of Albert Henry and Constance (Fazio) Cleary, Sr., and he attended Watertown schools. He served honorably in the US Navy from January 27, 1960, to November 1, 1961.

He married Carolyn M. "Lindy" Gilligan on July 25, 1960. She passed away on December 30, 2018.

John began as a welder for various businesses in the Watertown area. He then began his career in corrections. He retired as a Corrections Sergeant after 26 years of service to the Department of Corrections and from Dry Hill Correctional Facility. He enjoyed hunting and golf.

John is survived by his three sons, John A. Cleary Jr. and wife Marcie, Watertown, Richard S. Cleary and companion Cathy Maley, TN, and William A. Cleary and companion Elizabeth Whilcher, IN; 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; brother Albert Cleary Jr., KY; three sisters, Frances Catalina, Syracuse, Constance Cleary, Watertown, and Evelyn Findelis, Pillar Point; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with his parents and wife, he was predeceased by brother Donald Cleary.

As per his wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown, and online condolences to his family may be posted at www.cummingsfuneral.com. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St., Watertown, NY 13601.

Dean and my thoughts and prayers go out to you Jr. and your entire family. John was one of a kind his laughter and sense of humor it made it easier for a lot of us to face the next 8 to 16 hrs. It was a pleasure for us to have known him. RIP John
