Helen L. Hungerford, age 88, of Hobe Sound, FL and Clayton, NY passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Helen was born on January 30, 1925 to Ray and Anna Leavery in Clayton, NY. She was predeceased by her brothers, Francis and William and her sisters, Ruth Tucker and June Knox. She is survived by her brothers George of Clayton, NY and Walter of Liverpool, NY as well as nieces and nephews.
Helen was married to James (Jim) Hungerford, this being their 69th year of marriage.
She was the loving mother of James (Sylvia) of Webster, NY, David (Lynda) of West Islip, NY, and Pete (Karen) of Port Saint Lucie, FL. She was the cherished grandmother of six and great-grandmother of seven.
Helen graduated from Clayton Central School and the Syracuse Business School. She was employed by several companies including their family business, Hungerford Hardware in Clayton, NY.
She was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY and served as the chairman of the 1980 Antique Boat Show.
She was a member of the Eaglewood 18 hole Ladies Golf Association in Hobe Sound, FL and was the 1988 lady golf champion. Her hobbies were family, golf and travel. Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Clayton, NY and St. Christopher’s in Hobe Sound, FL.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 6, at 10AM at St. Mary's Church, Clayton, NY with burial following in Clayton Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Funeral arrangements are with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc. in Clayton, NY. Donations can be made in her name to Saint Mary’s Catholic Church at 521 James Street, Clayton, NY, 13624.
